A Guide for Consumer Brands To Get Products Cited with AI Search Optimization

To optimize a search engine for a consumer brand, ensure every AI search engine your customers use can access your pages, read accurate product information, find independent reviews of your products, and confirm whether they mention your brand.

Because each engine reads a different selection of these sources, you have to do the work engine by engine.

Much of the advice on SEO for AI search treats "AI" as a single search engine.

That is not true. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini each draw on different sources. If you block one crawler or omit one feed, you will disappear from that search engine even if your content is of high quality.

Key takeaways

  • Every engine has its own supply line. A crawler to allow, a product data route, and a report to watch.

  • Google doesn't need llms.txt or special schema. It needs your pages indexed, snippet-eligible, and opted in through Search Console.

  • Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already in ChatGPT. Everyone else applies or goes through a feed provider.

  • Measure per engine. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and one UTM parameter cover most of it.

How do you optimize for AI search when each engine reads things differently?

For each engine you set up, check whether it can crawl your pages, read your product data, and find independent reviews of your products.

Most consumer brands maintain one of the three. They've done SEO, so Google can crawl them.

A different team manages the product feed, and reviews live on third-party sites that no one on the brand side monitors.

Which is why a brand can appear at the top of Google's search results and yet be absent from ChatGPT's product answers.

Here's where each engine gets its information, according to its own documentation:

What does AI Overviews optimization require from your site?

Flowchart of how Google AI Overviews builds an answer: query fan-out, retrieval from the Search index, Merchant Center and Business Profile, a grounded response, then supporting links.

Three things: your page is indexed, it's eligible to show a snippet, and your site is opted in to generative AI features in Search Console. That's the full list of requirements in Google's AI optimization guide, updated 10 July 2026.

Nothing else is mandatory. Google says you don't need llms.txt files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

So if you're eligible for Google Search today, you're eligible for AI Overviews. Google decides whether to cite you based on the quality of what it finds.

How to rank in AI Overviews

  1. Switch on generative AI features in Search Console. It's a two-minute setting that's easy to miss.

  2. Keep product and category pages indexed and snippet-eligible. Without a snippet, a page can't appear in an AI Overview.

  3. Publish non-commodity content. Google's first best practice is content that's unique and useful, not a rewrite of what every competitor says.

  4. Keep a clear technical structure. Clean headings, crawlable links, and pages Google can render.

  5. Complete your Merchant Center feed. Google says Merchant Center and Business Profile "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results."

  6. Answer the follow-up questions on the page. Google splits one question into several related searches (it calls this query fan-out), so sizing, materials, and compatibility give your page more ways in.

  7. Add high-quality images and video. Google says AI features "can bring in relevant images and video."

  8. Skip llms.txt and special schema. Google says neither is needed. Spend the time on steps 1 to 7.

  9. Track it in Search Console. The Generative AI performance report shows your AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions.

What does ChatGPT need to find and recommend your products?

Flowchart of how ChatGPT search works: it decides to search, rewrites the prompt into queries, retrieves from search partners, crawled pages and product data, then answers with citations.

Two things: OAI-SearchBot must be able to crawl your site, and OpenAI must have your product data. The rest is data quality.

Start with the crawler. OpenAI runs three, and its crawler documentation treats them differently:

  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links."

  • GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train models. Blocking it is a training decision, not a search decision.

  • ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user asks. It doesn't crawl automatically, and robots.txt rules may not apply.

Then the products. OpenAI's merchant page says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are "already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required." Everyone else applies or shares data through a feed provider, SFTP, or API.

What ChatGPT rewards is richer data. OpenAI names images, pricing, reviews, and availability as factors that help products "surface with more accurate information when shoppers compare options." Since March 2026, OpenAI also lets merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on discovery.

How to optimize for ChatGPT

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Check for an old blanket AI-bot rule. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours to apply.

  2. Decide on GPTBot separately. It's a training choice and doesn't affect ChatGPT search.

  3. Confirm your catalog route. Shopify and Etsy are automatic; everyone else applies.

  4. Send complete product data. Fill every field OpenAI names above.

  5. Keep price and stock current. A stale price is a wrong answer about your product.

  6. Make your product pages convert. The purchase happens on your own checkout, not inside ChatGPT.

  7. Track referrals. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its referral links.

What does Perplexity SEO reward when it picks products?

Flowchart of how Perplexity picks sources: it searches the web, ranks sources and products on authority and relevance using crawled pages, merchant details and shopper history, then summarizes and cites.

Relevance, authority, and detail. Perplexity says it ranks product listings "using similar criteria" to its answer engine, which ranks sources "based on authority and relevance." It's also more likely to recommend merchants who provide "deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing, and specifications."

Two things you can't buy or control. Perplexity says advertisers "cannot pay to list their products," and it personalizes results using each shopper's past searches and saved preferences.

Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot "is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." A second agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a user asks and "generally ignores robots.txt rules."

Checkout runs through PayPal, and Perplexity says retailers stay the merchant of record.

How to optimize for Perplexity shopping

  1. Allow PerplexityBot and its published IP ranges.

  2. Join the merchant program. Perplexity describes it as free.

  3. Publish full specifications. Include dimensions, materials, and compatibility on the page, not just in the feed.

  4. Keep pricing and availability live. Both are details Perplexity names.

  5. Show reviews on the product page. Reviews are on Perplexity's list too.

  6. Build authority off your own site. Editorial coverage and third-party reviews carry the authority signal its answer engine ranks on.

  7. Track referrals from perplexity.ai. There's no citation report.

How do you get cited in Microsoft Copilot?

Flowchart of how Microsoft Copilot grounds answers: it parses the prompt, sends a grounding query to Bing, composes the response from the Bing index and Microsoft Merchant Center, and cites sources.

Copilot cites what Bing can find and what Microsoft Merchant Center tells it about your products. It's also the only engine here, besides Google, that reports your citations.

Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026. It shows total citations, cited pages, and grounding queries across Copilot, Bing's AI summaries, and partner experiences.

For products, Microsoft Advertising says the first step is Microsoft Merchant Center with a UCP-ready feed. Copilot Checkout is open to English-language merchants selling to US buyers in USD.

How to rank in Microsoft Copilot

  1. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools. No setup, no citation data.

  2. Write to the grounding queries. They're the phrases the AI used to find content it then cited.

  3. Push changes with IndexNow. Bing points to it for content changes like prices and stock.

  4. Submit a UCP-ready feed to Microsoft Merchant Center. It's Microsoft's stated first step for Copilot shopping.

  5. Check your Copilot Checkout status. Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically; PayPal and Stripe merchants opt in.

  6. Watch citation share by intent and topic. Bing added both in June 2026, so you can see where competitors get cited instead.

What drives visibility in Gemini?

Flowchart of how Gemini answers: it retrieves from Google Search, the Shopping Graph and connected apps, drafts several responses, safety-checks each and shows the best one with sources.

Your Google Merchant Center feed and your crawlable pages. Google publishes no citation rules for the Gemini app, so those are the two routes you can control.

Google's help center says the related sources Gemini shows can include public websites. And Merchant Center help says UCP-powered checkout appears on AI Mode and Gemini, with Google Pay and you as seller of record, for select merchants in the United States, Canada and Australia.

How to optimize for Gemini

  1. Keep Merchant Center complete and current. The same feed now reaches Shopping, AI Mode, and Gemini.

  2. Apply for UCP-powered checkout through Google's interest form if you sell in an eligible country.

  3. Prepare the technical pieces. Add the checkout eligibility attribute to your feed and set up a Google Pay & Wallet Console account.

  4. Keep product pages crawlable and well structured, since Gemini's sources can include public websites.

  5. Track it with prompt monitoring. Search Console's report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, not the Gemini app.

Feed and structured data checklist by engine

Work through it in four passes: crawlers, feeds, markup, and opt-ins.

1. Open your site to the right crawlers

Your robots.txt should include these rules, with nothing else blocking the same bots:

User-agent: Googlebot

Allow: /

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot

Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot

Allow: /

User-agent: Bingbot

Allow: /

Then check two things robots.txt can't fix:

  • Your firewall agrees with it: Perplexity asks sites to allow its published IP ranges and to match on both user agent and IP in Cloudflare or AWS WAF rules.

  • You gave it a day: OpenAI and Perplexity both say changes can take about 24 hours to apply.

2. Build one product feed and send it to four places

Keep one master feed and send it to Google Merchant Center (AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini), Microsoft Merchant Center (Copilot), Perplexity's merchant program and, if you're not on Shopify or Etsy, OpenAI. Fill these fields for every product:

  • Google's required seven: id, title, description, link, image_link, availability and price, per its product data specification.

  • Brand and GTIN: Brand is required for most new products. GTIN is strongly recommended and required in some categories; use MPN only when there's no GTIN.

  • Variants: For US apparel, item_group_id, color and size are required.

  • Extra images, reviews and full specifications.

3. Mark up product pages to match the feed

AI features need no special schema, but Product and Offer markup makes pages eligible for merchant listings and keeps your feed honest.

  • Required: name, image and an offer with price and priceCurrency.

  • Add: gtin, availability, shippingDetails, hasMerchantReturnPolicy, aggregateRating and review.

  • Test every template in Google's Rich Results Test, not just one page.

  • Let the markup correct the feed: Merchant Center's automatic item updates read it to fix price, sale price, availability and condition. Google calls this a fix for "sporadic problems," not a replacement for feed updates.

  • Ping Bing with IndexNow every time a price or stock level changes.

4. Switch on the opt-ins

  • Google Search Console: turn on generative AI features.

  • Google checkout on AI Mode and Gemini: submit the UCP interest form, then add native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) to eligible products. Only listings with it show the "Buy" button.

  • Copilot Checkout: automatic on Shopify; PayPal and Stripe merchants opt in.

  • ChatGPT and Perplexity: no setting beyond the merchant route in pass 2.

Checklist table of six feed and structured data tasks across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini: the crawler to allow, where to submit product data, price sync, Product markup, reviews and opt-in settings.

How to measure AI search optimization

Measure each engine with its own report, then add prompt tracking for the gaps. No single tool covers all five engines.

  • Google: Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions for your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google rolled it out to all sites by 31 August 2026. Two caveats: several links from your site in one AI answer count as one impression, and the report has the usual 1,000-row limit.

  • Copilot: Bing's AI Performance report now includes intents, topics, and citation share, added in June 2026. Citation share tells you how often you're cited for a query compared with everyone else.

  • ChatGPT: OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs." Build a segment on it in your analytics.

  • Perplexity: Segment sessions referred from perplexity.ai. Perplexity doesn't publish a citation report.

  • Gemini: No first-party report yet. Search Console's report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode only, so the Gemini app lives in prompt tracking.

Report by engine, not as one "AI" number. A gain on Google and a loss on ChatGPT cancel out in a blended figure and hide both problems. If you'd rather start from a baseline, our full-surface AI visibility audit maps every engine in week one.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search optimization for a consumer brand?

It is making sure the AI engines your buyers use can reach your pages, read accurate product data and find independent reviews, then measuring whether they cite you. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini each read a different mix of those sources, so the work is done and measured engine by engine.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google's AI optimization guide says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, or special schema.org markup to appear in generative AI features. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and your site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.

How do I get my products into ChatGPT?

If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, OpenAI says your catalog is already integrated. Other merchants can apply to share a product feed or use a supported feed provider. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, so ChatGPT search can read your pages. OpenAI charges no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.

How do I show up in Perplexity shopping?

Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permit Perplexity's published IP ranges, then join Perplexity's merchant program, which it describes as free. Perplexity says products indexed with robust details have a better chance of being recommended, so complete specifications, pricing, and availability matter more than marketing copy.

How do I measure traffic and visibility from AI search?

Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot, and the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter for ChatGPT referrals in analytics. Add share-of-answer tracking for the prompts that drive revenue, because no single report covers every engine.

Which AI engine should a consumer brand optimize for first?

Start with Google, because AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the search engine your buyers already use, and the eligibility rules are published. Then fix ChatGPT and Perplexity access and feeds, which are quick if you sell on Shopify. Set up Microsoft Merchant Center for Copilot, and your Google Merchant Center feed already serves Gemini.
