How TikTok GMV Max Works and How To Scale Your Shop Sales With It

If you sell on TikTok Shop, all your Shop ads now use GMV Max. You choose your budget and ROI target, while TikTok picks which videos to show, where they appear, and how much each impression costs.

This change is important as Black Friday budgets increase. Most of the controls paid social teams used are gone, so successful brands will focus on the four inputs left and measure results by total shop GMV, not just campaign ROI.

Here’s how TikTok GMV Max works, what you can still control, how to set ROI targets and budgets, how to provide enough creativity for your campaign, and how to manage it during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026.

Key takeaways

  • GMV Max is now the only campaign type TikTok allows for ads selling from a TikTok Shop. You can’t create manual Video, Product, or LIVE Shopping Ads for a Shop destination anymore.

  • Product GMV Max promotes your catalog in the feed, search, Shop Tab, and TikTok Ad Network. LIVE GMV Max, on the other hand, drives traffic to your livestream.

  • You can control which products you include, your ROI target, your budget, and which videos your campaign can use.

  • GMV Max counts every order on promoted products, including organic and affiliate sales. So, measure its success by total shop GMV and margin.

  • For Black Friday, keep Target ROI as your default setting. Use Max delivery for short bursts, and avoid making changes that remove ROI protection.

What is GMV Max?

GMV Max is TikTok’s automated campaign type designed specifically for TikTok Shop ads. With GMV Max, you select the products or livestream you want to promote, set your ROI target and budget, and then TikTok takes care of the rest.

The platform automatically chooses the best videos, placements, audiences, and bids to help increase your gross merchandise value. From July 2025, GMV Max became the only campaign type available for ads that sell directly from a TikTok Shop.

If you’re using the Sales objective and sending people to a TikTok Shop, you won’t be able to create, edit, or duplicate LIVE Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads, or Video Shopping Ads anymore.

Existing campaigns will keep running, but if you upgrade them, they’ll be moved to GMV Max and use their past ROI as the new target. There are just a couple of exceptions: LIVE Shopping Ads that run from a TikTok ID. Spark Ads are still available as a format, and any authorized Spark Ads posts with product anchors will work with GMV Max.

It’s a good idea to make sure teams are up to speed on TikTok Shop GMV Max, since this is now the main product they’ll be setting up in the Seller Center and Ads Manager.

How GMV Max Works?

As we saw above, GMV Max is an automation inside TikTok Shop ads. You set products, an ROI target and a budget. TikTok then selects from eligible creatives and delivers across TikTok Shop placements. Here’s how this automation works:

Omnichannel Integration

TikTok places your Shop ad on its own surfaces where people already browse and shop.

Product GMV Max can use the TikTok feed, search, the Shop Tab, and TikTok Ad Network with both video and product card formats, all in one campaign. You still pick the products, connect your shop and ad account, and make sure your catalog and stock are up to date.

For example, a single Product GMV Max campaign for a serum SKU can appear in the feed and on the Shop Tab from the same setup.

Organic & Affiliate Boosting

Product GMV Max can use authorized shoppable posts as ad creative, but it does not automatically boost every organic video on your account.

For a post to be eligible, it needs a product anchor for a product in the campaign and platform authorization through a shop-linked TikTok account, a Spark Ads post in the ad account running the campaign, or Affiliate Creatives for Ads (ACA) using Affiliate Mass Authorization or a video code.

When posts are eligible and auto-select is turned on, TikTok can test them as ads along with other available assets. While a Product GMV Max campaign is running, TikTok counts both paid and organic orders for the promoted products toward that campaign.

AI-Driven Optimization

TikTok’s automation picks creatives, placements, audiences, and bids within the ROI target and budget you set.

You still control the key parts: which products go into the campaign, the ROI target, daily budget, which accounts and posts are authorized, creative quality, and whether you have enough inventory. The system does not change your break-even calculations or promise results.

Differences between Product GMV Max vs LIVE GMV Max

Product GMV Max is used to promote your catalog, while LIVE GMV Max is designed to boost a livestream. You set up each one separately.

Product GMV Max

Product GMV Max helps you promote items from your TikTok Shop catalog and aims to maximize non-LIVE ROI for your selected products. It uses videos and product cards.

While active, it tracks all paid and organic orders for those products. Each product can only be in one campaign at a time, and if you promote all products, Video and Product Shopping Ads are turned off across your ad accounts. Product GMV Max is available in the US.

LIVE GMV Max

LIVE GMV Max promotes a livestream on one TikTok account and works to increase livestreaming gross revenue. LIVE ROI is the total livestreaming GMV divided by ad spend. The system uses both Video-to-LIVE and LIVE-to-LIVE creative. It tracks every paid and organic conversion during the LIVE, including sales of other shops' products.

You can only run one campaign per TikTok identity. When a LIVE GMV Max campaign is active, it pauses any existing LIVE Shopping Ads on the shop's official account, and those ads do not restart when the campaign ends. Currently, LIVE GMV Max is available only for Southeast Asian markets.

How does TikTok's automation choose creatives, placements, and bids?

TikTok takes care of building and running ads using your products, any videos you’ve authorized, and the ROI target you set.

Creative selection

Auto-select explores all existing and future videos with no cap, and TikTok recommends it over manual selection. GMV Max uses available creative assets to create ads, creates and pauses ads itself, and runs both videos and product cards.

Placements

Ads can show up in the feed, search results, the Shop Tab, and across the TikTok Ad Network (which used to be called Pangle), all in a single step. You don’t need to pick placements yourself, since TikTok handles that automatically and optimizes audience settings for you.

Bids

There’s no manual bidding or audience selection here. Instead, you set an ROI target, and that acts as your bid. GMV Max will optimize for ROI daily, so it’s normal to see some fluctuations throughout the day. A lower ROI target usually means more delivery and more GMV, while a higher target can slow spending.

How to set up your ROI the right way

Begin with TikTok's recommended target, compare it to your break-even point, and then don’t change it for three days. ROI means gross revenue divided by ad cost. For example, a target of 5 means you get $5 in sales for every $1 spent on ads.

Here’s how to set up the ROI in 3 easy steps:

  1. Find your recommended target: TikTok says to use your historical non-LIVE GMV divided by your historical ad cost. You should follow that number or go a bit lower. For example, if you have $8,000 in daily non-LIVE GMV and $1,600 in ad costs, your target would be 5.

  2. Check your break-even point: Break-even ROI is 1 divided by your margin after product cost, platform fees, and affiliate commission. If your margin is 35%, your break-even is 2.86, so a target of 5 gives you profit. But remember, a campaign can meet its ROI target but still lose money if the target is below break-even.

  3. Hold your settings: Keep each setting for at least three days. Changing them too often can interrupt the learning process.

What to Know About TikTok ROI Protection

Starting February 25, 2026, TikTok introduced a new way to protect your ROI on GMV Max campaigns. If a campaign delivers less than 90% of its daily ROI target and gets more than 20 orders in a day, TikTok will issue ad credit.

The amount is calculated as total cost minus gross revenue, divided by 0.9 times the daily ROI target. However, not every day qualifies. For example, if you raise the Target ROI on Product GMV Max, lower it more than once, make more than two manual ROI changes on LIVE GMV Max, pause or delete a campaign, edit a product, or adjust Max delivery spend and Creative Boost budgets, those days won't count.

Automatic Promotion days or major LIVE switches are not considered manual changes. To stay eligible, try to group ROI changes and product edits into one planned day.

How much budget does a GMV Max campaign need?

TikTok suggests setting your budget by doubling your historical non-LIVE GMV and dividing by your ROI target. For example, if your non-LIVE GMV is $8,000 and your ROI target is 5, your daily budget would be $3,200. Set the budget as a daily amount, since GMV Max budgets work this way. Ads Manager will also give you its own recommendation.

Try to keep your budget use below 80%, and increase your budget when you see better results. Essentially, the auto budget increase feature can raise your daily budget by 50% at a time, up to 10 times a day, if both your ROI and budget usage are strong.

How to read GMV Max results

Begin by looking at your total shop GMV and margin. This is important because GMV Max reports include more than just the sales directly generated by its ads.

Attribution

While a Product GMV Max campaign runs, every paid and organic order for its products is attributed to it, whether or not the buyer saw an ad, according to TikTok's attribution page for GMV Max.

GMV is counted for same-day orders on a one-day window. LIVE GMV Max takes every conversion inside the stream, including products from other shops, but no order placed after a viewer leaves. Campaign ROI is total-channel ROI.

Total shop GMV

TikTok recommends reviewing your total shop GMV to spot any incremental gains after you activate GMV Max. There are four key checks to run: compare GMV Max results before and after activation in Seller Center, check product-level ROI against your break-even point, review the Ads × Affiliate report, and reconcile Seller Center GMV with your own order data.

Keep in mind that the in-app GMV number acts as a channel scoreboard, so it reflects overall performance, not just paid results.

How should you run TikTok Shop ads through Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

It’s a good idea to finalize your campaign settings before the holiday rush begins, so scheduled Max delivery can handle the heavy lifting for you. For reference, Thanksgiving falls on November 26, Black Friday is November 27, and Cyber Monday lands on November 30 in 2026.

Aim to have your final Target ROI settings in place by November 20. This timing helps ensure the three-day rule wraps up before Thanksgiving week kicks off.

Make sure to upload all affiliate authorizations and Spark Ads posts ahead of the Cyber 5, which covers Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday. For your top-performing products, schedule Max delivery throughout the Cyber 5, setting a clear end date since ROI protection won’t apply during these high-traffic days.

During the peak, avoid making manual changes to ROI, editing products, or pausing protected campaigns. Also, try to keep budget usage below 80 percent so there’s room for automatic budget increases if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you run GMV Max without a TikTok Shop?

No. GMV Max only works with products and livestreams from a TikTok Shop. To use it, your shop must be linked to a Business Center, and your advertiser account needs GMV Max authorization for that shop. If you only sell on your own website, you can use standard TikTok campaigns to send traffic there.

Can an agency run GMV Max on a brand's TikTok Shop?

Yes, through authorization. The shop owner grants the agency's ad account GMV Max authorization in Seller Center or Business Center, and the agency needs operator or admin access to that account. For LIVE GMV Max, the TikTok account hosting the stream authorizes one Business Center at a time. A missing permission greys out the Create GMV Max ads button.

Can the same product run in two GMV Max campaigns?

No. Before adding a product to a Product GMV Max campaign, TikTok will ask you to remove it from any Video Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads, or other GMV Max campaigns, or to close those campaigns first. If you promote every product in your shop, TikTok will turn off all Video and Product Shopping Ads in your ad accounts.

Do affiliates earn commission when GMV Max uses their videos?

Yes. According to TikTok, affiliate creators can earn commissions when people buy your products through their videos used in Shop Ads. The posts keep the original product links, which you cannot change, and ads using those videos will pause if the affiliate collaboration ends. Affiliate videos in a GMV Max campaign also show a commercial content label.

Is TikTok GMV Max the same as Shopee GMV Max?

No. They share a name and a goal, growing gross merchandise value, but they are separate products on separate platforms. Shopee's GMV Max runs inside Shopee Ads and bids toward a target ROAS on Shopee traffic. TikTok runs in TikTok Ads Manager or Seller Center against an ROI target on TikTok feed, search, Shop Tab, and LIVE traffic.
